Introduction to PIDs
A photoionization detector (PID) measures concentrations of organic and inorganic vapors from parts per billion (ppb) to parts per million (ppm) levels as high as 10,000 ppm.
The PID uses ultraviolet energy to ionize molecules causing them to release electrons and form positive ions. The positive ions are collected at a negative collector electrode, amplified, and converted to ppm readings presented on a digital liquid crystal display. Vapors exit the photoionization detector essentially unchanged.
This occurs when the ionization potential (IP) of molecules is less than the energy output level eV of the UV lamp. The most commonly used lamps in PID rental instruments are 10.6 eV, 11.7 eV, and 11.8 eV. Our PID rental pool is one of the largest in the world.
